Simplifying the World of Fitness, Health and Nutrition.




Hi, hello, it's just me checking in again! I know the lack of blog posts at the moment isn't the best, I am hoping that my life isn't as hectic soon (probably not any time soon but you know) and I can try dedicate some more time to writing. But for now, we move. 

This is a post I have been itching to write. If you follow me over on my fitness/sport therapy page over on the Instagram @hollijessitherapies (shameless plug). I posted a post last week about how we can very easily feel overwhelmed by the health and fitness industry as a whole. Over the past weeks I have multiple people tell me how they like the simplicity or my approach and my workouts. I've also had comments about how people do in fact feel overwhelmed by the fitness industry, that it can feel intimidating and even certain professionals can actually make people feel this way. Like it's some secret club you can't enter unless you know the exact definition of 1RM. I've seen it before to, where people who have never been to the gym before are incredibly intimidated or nervous because of the personal trainers in there. It's so easily compare ourselves in this world, especially with the likes of Instagram and to very easily feel inadequate to pick up a dumbbell or try working out because you don't feel good enough.


 If you don't know everything, you mustn't be adequate right? Incorrect. 


As much as I love the world of fitness, health and nutrition, I also find it incredibly toxic. Hopefully, I am on a mission to change that, if only by a smidge (I know sadly I am not a superhero).


Fitness, health, nutrition and even coming from a sport injury perspective, rehabilitation doesn't have to be over complicated. We can simplify it. We can make it more approachable and more accessible for people. Nobody is a failure because they don't know what a 'superset' is or don't have every supplement under the sun in their cupboard. That doesn't mean they can't be fit and healthy and enjoy what they do. 


From a professional point of view. It's the professionals job to be able to know all the technical sh*t and also their job to be able to communicate in a way that isn't going to scare a person of the face of the Earth from the gym, rehabilitation, better nutrition and so on. You get my point. If something is too complicated and overwhelming, what do we do we run away, right? 9 time out of 10 anyway. So make it less about yourself and more about the client or patient. What level are they already at? Are they interested in learning? Do they just want it to be simple and enjoyable? What are there goals? Is it lift a certain weight or PB or is it simply to be able to happily play with their children without being out of breath. Think about them as an individual. 


Now, to you reading this, who really just wants everything simplified and not a faff, am I right? 


Let's begin with exercise, specifically weight training. Whether you are beginner or very much good friends with lifting weights it can be sometimes incredibly beneficial to strip it back to the basics. Learning basic movement patterns and starting there without over complicating it. Like I mentioned above, you don't need to understand all the crazy ass terminology or fancy training methods, especially not when you are just starting. Just because you go in to the gym and do a simple workout of 5 exercises, and couple of rounds of each. That is okay, and it doesn't mean your workout was invalid. In fact it was probably more effective and again this is all dependent on training level! This would also be a great time for me to add, you don't have to be completely dying in your workout for it to be successful. The amount I have seen this especially with fitness professional, absolutely destroying their clients or influences over Instagram. It's bonkers and there is no needs. It's a completely unrealistic approach. Especially if it takes the enjoyment out of it. 


To flip this, I think running is a common and appropriate thing to pop in here. Reverting back to a year ago when we went into the first lockdown and everyone decided to pick up running, which by the way I am all here for but I also think it placed a lot of pressure on being able to do it a certain amount and what you should and shouldn't be doing. Like brilliant, if you want to start running but don't just dive right into it doing loads and loads to be left feeling completely deflated. Start small and work up. I mean that counts for any form of exercise (post about returning to sport and fitness after lockdown coming sooooon). 


Following on from this, rehabilitation from an injury. It's a big ass world, believe me. It is more complex than the prescribing exercise to a healthy uninjured individual. Whether you're an athlete or not, no matter how big the injury or how painful. The rehabilitation following doesn't have to be something brand new, scary and overwhelming. I think it can be very easy to overcomplicate things leaving you feeling like you can't recover or get back to what you love doing when that simply isn't the case. Again, its about that individualism. 


And lastly on this little ramble, nutrition. Same statement, don't over complicate it. Think you need protein powder or you wont progress but can't afford it? Doesn't matter you don't need it. Think you need some crazy ass thing call spirulina because Jane take it on Instagram and says you can't be 'healthy' without it. Reality check you don't need it. Do you feel intimidated by the world of macros? Yeah I do too, don't worry and I have been working in this industry some time. It doesn't matter. You can still reach your goals by eating like a normal human being btw. 


I know I have summed everything up here into a bit of a nut shell. I'd be intrigued to go deep into these topic individually. It's time to stop overcomplicating thing that are basic human needs and we should all be able to do and enjoy.
